Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's chief executive, is one of the most famous people in the U.S. and the whole online environment. However his name is little known in Japan, one of the most developed countries with the world's communications infrastructure, says The New York Times.
Less than two million people use Facebook in Japan, which is more than 2% of the population accessing the Internet in this country, while U.S. 60% of internet users have an account on Facebook, according to a study published Socialbakers.
Social networks used mainly by Japanese (Mixi, Gree and Mobage-town) allow them to hide their identity, compared with up imposing more restrictions in this regard and that promotes the name of accounts which include user's name and surname.
Internet users in Japan often use aliases or nicknames.
"Facebook meets a challenge in Japan, "said Shigenori Suzuki, an analyst at Nielsen / NetRatings. "In Japan we have a series of strong rivals and up over a sum of factors related to web culture of this country, " said Shigenori Suzuki.
